FAQ

The Nigerian Truth Index

Q: What do the people or constituents want from government and how can we capture their collective expectations in a formal rating tool?

A: The Truth Index Project takes on the novel task of creating an accurate measure of good governance with a unique and important perspective. Part of our task is taking into consideration the opinions of the people in the region and fine-tuning its relevance to the psyche of the people.

RATIONALE

“Ask the typical Nigerian what they want from their leaders, how they evaluate the leadership, or why they would vote for a political candidate, and they will respond with a jumble of contradictory notions and criteria. Their decisions in this regard are heavily influenced by religion, ethnicity, and emotion. Now, ask them as subgroups what they want, and uncertainty ensues; ask the various ethnic groups identical questions, and all hell breaks loose, animosity and turmoil ensue. “

The Truth Index Project (T.I.P) aims to elicit, capture, and synthesize the raw desires of the vast millions across the country, bringing to bear a harmony of perception and outlook that will aid in harmonious interaction both on an intellectual and practical level.

The TIP would serve to create a language of discussion that is standardized. This will douse tensions, thus enabling an amicable conversation centred on performance. Groups could easily come together with common parameters to assess their leadership.

It is hoped that other outcomes would be the de-radicalization of false beliefs and misdirected negative emotions, creating a mind shift with the intention to inform, educate, and liberate through the acceptance of common denominators. Common denominations will allow for measurement that cuts across ethnic, emotional, and religious lines. The TIP will also be a research tool and an important foundation for the next generation of students, researchers, and government officials to build on.

To accomplish this, the outcome (Truth Index) must be relatable to the average person; thus, a research approach that considers ground sentiment and people's subjective perceptions is critical.

Introduction to the Truth Index Project (T.I.P.)

"From time immemorial, good governance has been the focus of students of development, history, politics, and even business, as it forms the bedrock for any nation’s progress. Thus, several measures of the quality of governance have been created (Thomas, 2010), such as the World Bank’s Worldwide Governance Indicators (WGI), the Ibrahim Index of African Governance (IIAG), and the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM). Each of these measures has its merits and demerits, which have been extensively reviewed in the literature."

The Truth Index Project is work in progress by the Truth Index Development Group, which is a group of professionals who are taking on several developmental tasks, including developing these governance indices for Africa.
